Orange Spiced Hot Chocolate

When chocolate and orange get together then invite in a little spice…it’s an antioxidant-rich, mood-boosting party in a mug! Not only does this hot cocoa satisfy a sweet tooth, it will also warm you up from the inside out. Bonus: there’s a big dose of anti-inflammatory spices in the mix from the raw cacao and orange zest!

INGREDIENTS

Serves 1

1 cup almond, cashew, or coconut milk (Try making your own!)
Squeeze of juice from half an orange
1-2 strips of orange rind
½ teaspoon cinnamon
pinch of cardamom
pinch of ground nutmeg
1 ½ tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder or raw cacao (more for an intense chocolate flavor)
1 teaspoon orange zest
1 tablespoon maple syrup or to desired sweetness
pinch of sea salt
*OPTIONAL: 2 squares of rich dark chocolate

METHOD

In a small-medium saucepan, heat the nut milk and a squeeze of the juice from half an orange over medium-low heat. Add in the orange rind, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cardamom. Do not boil. Once the liquid is heated through, stir in the cocoa or cacao powder into the warmed liquid until completely dissolved. Add the orange zest and pinch of salt. Heat another 2 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove the orange rind. Add in the maple syrup or coconut sugar to desired sweetness. Whisk the mixture before pouring it into a mug. Top with the optional coconut whipped cream and cocoa powder, chocolate chunks, and/or more orange zest. Sip and savor!

*NOTE: To make an extra decadent cup, add in a few squares of rich dark chocolate while the nut milk is heating!
