How to Have Your Best and Healthiest Year Yet

My favorite part about this time of year? All the ENTHUSIASM that swirls around improving health and wellness. Whether you want to eat better, commit to a fun fitness program, stress less, or simply speak to yourself with more kindness, it’s energizing and empowering to take control of your routine and change it for the better.

As we move into the final days of 2016, I’m sending out a big virtual hug of appreciation for inviting me into your life and allowing me to guide you along the way. THANK YOU for following along and being a part of this {healthy} foodie, fierce, self-lovin’ world that we have created. Joining together as a community – and occasionally holding each other accountable! – is a compelling way to grow, evolve, and improve our lives, one day at a time, and I am SO proud and humbled to do it with you.

…and speaking of growing! In 2017, you can expect MAJOR changes in how we communicate about healthy eating AND healthy thinking. (Psst: I’m talking videos, cooking demos, a podcast, live retreats, a brand new website…and more!)

In the meantime, let’s embrace this end-of-year moment to celebrate all of the changes we have made. As you know, I am a huge believer that feeling healthier doesn’t have to involve major life upheaval or herculean efforts. Enduring results usually come from consistent, small actions and subtle, meaningful shifts that lead us to adopt and embrace new, healthier habits in a lasting way.

So to help get this “new year new you” party started, I’ve rounded up my best and most popular posts for a gentle (and realistic!) approach to 2017.

Here's how to begin the {healthy} new year with a bang:

Eat more color. You don't have to follow rigid rules and count every calorie or carb. Simply fill your plate with all the hues of the rainbow to add instant energy and nourishment while crowding out some of the less healthier choices!

Release Food GuiltFeeling guilty about what you ate (or didn't eat) does more harm to your mind and body than the extra serving of french fries or slice of pecan pie. Time to kiss guilt goodbye for good, especially since it's completely counterproductive and serves no forward moving purpose. Let it go!

Boost your mood. It happens to all of us at some point or another: we feel “stuck,” or can’t seem to shake that "meh" feeling. Arm yourself with some easy (and fun!) ways to get unstuck and reinvigorated, even when you want to hide under the covers.

Eat better, despite your busy scheduleSpend just a few hours in the kitchen and set yourself up for a week of healthy eating! Meal prep can reduce stress, halve family meal gripes, and make it easier for everyone under your roof to eat healthier. (It changed my life!)

Sleep betterSet up a nighttime ritual so that you can wind down and decompress before bed to get yourself ready for eight hours of deep, restorative sleep that will make the next day smoother AND more productive!

Use your toolsIt's a lot easier to eat better and feel better when your kitchen is fully stocked with just the right essentials. No fancy gadgets required!

Meditate. Meditation does not mean sitting on a pillow with your legs crossed while chanting om. There are simple, non-conventional ways to calm your mind & body...and soothe your soul.

Silence Food NoiseWhen you tune out all the external messages, you can tap into the brilliant wisdom of your own body. Let that inner nutritionist out in 2017! She knows what's best for YOU!

Boost your immunityIt's hard to feel your best unless you make your own health a full blown priority. By using colorful (and delicious!) food and other non-traditional methods to add to your immune-boosting routine, you can give yourself some extra TLC all year long.

Slow down, and don’t hide in your busy. A slower life is a healthier, more centered life and your mind, body, and metabolism will thank you! If slowing down is hard for you, ask yourself the difficult question: are you hiding in your busy? (I was!)

UnplugAs Anne Lamont says, "Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes...including you." Disconnect from all of your devices sometimes, and you'll connect more to your self, your experiences, and the people you love.

Choose a word to guide youYour WORD of the year will anchor the next 365 days around the sun and help you focus on how you want to feel and what you want to accomplish. (Mine is ease!)

Commit to plant–based eatingFood experts and nutritionists have disagreed about a lot of things over the years—the role of fat, the benefits and drawbacks of animal protein—but amidst these debates, they have always been able to agree on at least one thing: MORE PLANTS = GOOD.

Practice self-careSelf-care is not all-or-nothing—a little goes a long way. If you don’t fill up the love tank, you’ll have that much less to give. Everyone benefits from your commitment to self-care, especially you.

Notice your subconscious thoughts about food. A perfectly fueled, wonderfully rested body won't do you much good if it serves as a home to a negative and self-critical mind. The good news is that you are the creator of your thoughts, so you can change them!

Like yourself more. This is a hard one to embrace, but liking yourself gives others permission to like themselves, too. Let's start a quiet revolution to love our messy, imperfect selves...just as we are.

Cheers to a 2017 filled with many more {virtual} mindful meals together! Sending lots of love and leafy greens + a side of chocolate, too!
